Why did `Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra) wish to cut the tongue of his son `Ubaydullah?
The Imami Rafidah claim that `Ali and his four or five companions were always oppressed and humiliated by the Caliphs, those who claim this couldn’t be more wrong and below we see why.
In Masawi’-ul-Akhlaq lil-Khara’iti we read:
حَدَّثَنَا الرَّمَادِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ السَّلُولِيُّ، ثنا قَيْسٌ، عَنْ وَائِلٍ، عَنِ الْبَهِيِّ، أَنَّ عُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، سَبَّ الْمِقْدَاد بْنَ عَمْرٍو، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: ” عَلَيَّ نَذْرٌ إِنْ لَمْ أَقْطَعْ لِسَانَهُ “، فَمَشَى إِلَيْهِ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ فَكَلَّمُوهُ، فَقَالَ: ” دَعُونِي أَقْطَعْ لِسَانَهُ، فَلا يَسُبَّ بَعْدِي أَصْحَابَ الرَّسُولِ
Ahmad bin Mansour al-Ramadi (Thiqah Hafiz) -> Ishaq bin Mansour al-Saluli (Thiqah) -> Qays bin al-Rabi` al-Asadi (Saduq Yukhti’ Shi`ee) -> Wa’il bin Dawoud al-Taymi (Thiqah) -> `Abdullah bin Yasar al-Bahy (Saduq Yukhti’)
[That `Ubaydullah bin `Umar once cursed at al-Miqdad bin `Amro (al-Aswad), upon hearing this `Umar bin al-Khattab said: “I vow to cut-off his tongue!” but a group from the companions of the Prophet (saw) went to `Umar and talked him out of it, so he said: “Let me cut-off his tongue so that no one may insult the companions of the Messenger (saw) after me.”]
Also in al-Shifa fi Akhbar al-Mustafa by al-Qadi `Iyad we read:
وَرُوي عَن عُمَر بن الخطاب: أنَّه نَذَر قَطع لِسان عُبَيْد اللَّه بن عُمَر إذ شَتَم الْمِقْدَاد بن الأسْود، فَكُلم فِي ذَلِك، فَقَال: دَعُونِي أقْطَع لِسانَه، حَتَّى لَا يَشْتم أحَد بَعْد أَصْحَاب النَّبِيّ
[It was narrated from `Umar bin al-Khattab that he vowed to cut-off the tongue of (his son) `Ubaydullah bin `Umar when he cursed at al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad, but they tried talking him out of it so he said: “Let me cut-off his tongue so that after it no one may insult the companions of the Prophet (saw).”]
