The following is a response to the article on RevisitingtheSalaf entitled: No Boys Just Toys!, which was published on the 15th of January, 2012, and can be found here.

Indeed our scholars of the past and present were correct when they said that shias are liars.

If man is able to marry or cohabit [get a slave girl], then masturbation by hand is haram by him. Aqeel said, “Our leaders (by thought) and companions did not deny masturbation fully i.e. (say it is haram) but expressed the dislike / makrooh label to it. But, they did not explicitly say it is haram.”  He also said, “If man is not able to marry, and he is tempted to commit adultery, then masturbation is haram by him also.”

And the verse (Ayaah) prohibits him from performing masturbation, even if he was not able to resist, or was hesitant between lust and apathy yet there are women to marry and he does not, it is still disliked for him to masturbate and not Haram on him. And if his temptation was overwhelming and he was afraid of hardship as a traveller or prisoner or poor, then it is halal for him (as stated by Ahmad r.a). And it is narrated that the companions used to masturbate during their expeditions and long journeys (it does not refer to the Holy Prophet (saw) about this).

And if a woman had no husband and her temptation grew stronger, it is said by some of our companions that it is permissible for her to behold a ‘Akrabanj’ (which is made of leather in the shape of man’s part) for her to use, or the use of cucumbers or small percussion or what is similar to that.

Firstly we would like to make a few clarifications regarding the text translated by the Shia above.

The word “Cohabit” in the text, means to get a slave girl, it is allowed in Islam to fulfill the sexual desire with his female slave girl.

Secondly the first paragraph contains the following expression:

Which RTS translated to:

If man is not able to marry, and he is tempted to commit adultery, then masturbation is haram by him also.

Whereas it says the exact opposite, it actually says:

“If a man isn’t able to marry, and he does not have the sexual desire that tempts him to commit Zinah. Then masturbation becomes Haram for him.”

Through this poorly translated text above, RTS tries to lead the readers to believe that Imam ibn al-Qayyim (rah) allowed the use of sex toys for women.

When we refer back to the original text in the book, we find that RTS intentionally ignored this part of the paragraph and did not translate it:

Ibn al-Qayyim says in the same paragraph:

“And the correct opinion in my view, is that it is not permissible, because the Prophet (SAWS) advised those who were unable to marry to fast instead.”

Also in Majmou` al-Fatawa of Ibn Taymiyyah al-Hanbali (rah), we read that there are two opinions on masturbation in the Madhab of Imam Ahmad, and the one that forbids masturbation is the strongest:

“And he (Ibn Taymiyyah) may Allah have mercy on him was asked about “Masturbation”, Is it Haram or not?

He replied: As for the masturbation with the hand, it is forbidden by the vast majority of scholars, and it is the most correct opinion in the Madhab of Ahmad, and the one who does so is punished.”

So the majority of scholars declare masturbation as being strictly forbidden, while a minority opinion in the Hanafi and Hanbali Madhabs allows it only as a Rukhsa in extreme cases and they dislike it. Those who permit it in extreme cases also discourage it, for instance Imam Ibn Hazm (rah) said in al-Muhalla:

“Although we dislike it, because it goes against moral values and it is not a virtuous deed.”

Also we find it strange that a sect which permits Zinah (Mut`ah)  and other strange sexual Fatwas would be that offended by a Fatwa which declares masturbation as “Disliked”.

Although Grand Ayatullah Muhammad Husayn Fadlullah, their top scholar in Lebanon permits women to masturbate:

English:

“Woman’s masturbation

Q: What is the jurisprudence and rational basis for permitting the women’s masturbation?

A: It does not need any. In Islam everything is permissible unless it is explicitly prohibited. And since, it has been proven that woman does not produce semen, and that what is prohibited is stimulating the sexual organ to ejaculate, then the woman is allowed to stimulate her organ for it will not produce semen, although it might produce other liquids. Nevertheless, we advise against such a practice.”

Matter of the fact is, when Ahlul-Sunnah accuse the Shia of allowing Zinah under the title of “Mut`ah”, they do this based on the fact that ALL Twelver Shia scholars agree that Mut`ah is Halal. On the other hand we ask: What right do the Shia have of accusing us of “sexual deviance” when the vast majority of our scholars say that masturbation is Haram and the remaining minority discourage it and say it is disliked but only permissible in extreme circumstances!?
