Prophetic-narrations: Numbers and Authenticity

Share

Allah says in his book:

{Certainly did Allah confer [great] favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error.} [3:164]

And Allah says:

{Just as We have sent among you a messenger from yourselves reciting to you Our verses and purifying you and teaching you the Book and wisdom and teaching you that which you did not know.} [2:151]

And Allah says:

{And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad – and it is the truth from their Lord – He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition.} [47:2]

As a new Muslim, I find plenty of Qur’anic verses telling me to accept the teachings and guidance of the Prophet (saw), I find that Muhammad peace be upon him is the source of all divine knowledge, Allah sent him to us so we can learn from him and follow his example and way.

Thus I must follow everything the Prophet (saw) says, everything he does, and everything he accepts and allows from the actions of those believers surrounding him.

The man whom Allah chose is the source of all knowledge, so from where should I take his orders, his instructions and explanations? From the books of Ahlul-Sunnah? Or the books of the Twelver Imamis?

1- SAHIH AL-BUKHARI: Orders, sayings and instructions taken from the source of knowledge Muhammad (saw).

We observe the following about this book:

-Bukhari has 7,593 narrations in his book with repetitions, plus 1,341 Mu`allaqat.

-It is rare to find a non-prophetic narration in al-Bukhari, the vast majority of its narrations are prophetic sayings or orders or actions or description of his (saw) physical look or his interpretation of Qur’anic verses or decisions in military or economic matters or descriptions of his society and the location in which he lived (saw). A quick browse in the book by anyone easily shows that it is hard to find non-prophetic narrations in it.

-After its chains of transmission have been analysed and scrutinized, the scholars of Ahlul-Sunnah have a consensus that the narrations in this book are all reliable and authentic except for maybe five or seven reports in which there is disagreement.

2- KAFI AL-KULAYNI: Orders, sayings and instructions taken from the source of knowledge Muhammad (saw).

Regarding this book, there is a lot to talk about, a quick browse through al-Kafi unveils some important matters:

-First thing we notice, is that there is barely any mention of the Prophet (saw) in this giant book. The vast majority of its contents appear to be opinions and sayings of Ja`far bin Muhammad and his father.

Someone may say that Shia believe that whatever Ja`far narrates is taken from the Prophet (saw), well this isn’t correct even according to their own scholars who claim Imams can gain knowledge from three sources:

1- (The Prophet), He (saw) would teach and prepare the man who will succeed him by bestowing upon him secret knowledge and religious rulings that no one else knows.

2- (Voice in the heart and whispers in the ear), meaning if the Imam wishes to know a matter, Allah would make him know it, the information would be thrown into his heart or whispered into his ear.

3- (The holy spirit), He (saw) had a special angel who always accompanied him, other than Jibreel and more superior, he guides him and informs him of the news of the heavens, after he (saw) died, this angel was then transferred to his successor and then he accompanied each Imam.

Yet we do not even need to deal with it simply because the research is done from an unbiased point of view; the unbiased observer knows that Allah ordered us in the Qur’an to follow the guidance and commands of the Prophet Muhammad (saw), there was no mention of any guidance that needs to be taken from Ja`far al-Sadiq or Muhammad al-Jawad or any of the children of Husayn bin `Ali.

We are looking for narrations explicitly stating: The Prophet (saw) said this, or the Prophet (saw) did that etc…

-Other times we do find prophetic narrations, such as: “Abu Ja`far said: The Prophet (saw) said: etc…” What is apparent here is a disconnection, abu Ja`far never actually met the Prophet (saw) so that he may narrate from him, which is enough to render the report weak. However, in the Shia standards of Hadith it is considered connected since they claim that each Imam learned the Prophetic narrations from his father up until the Prophet (saw). We will rule on the narrations based on Shia standards and accept all such reports as connected.

-Another matter is, what Shia consider as authentic, they grade some narrations as “Sahih”, some as “Hasan” and some as “Muwathaq” are these all accepted as authentic in Shia standards?

Renowned Shia scholar of Hadith, Ayatullah al-`Allamah `Abdullah al-Mamaqani al-Najafi says in his book of Hadith sciences “Miqbas-ul-Hidaya” vol.1 pg.198:

In summary he says that al-Shaheed al-Thani (Zayn-ul-Deen bin `Ali al-`Amili) narrated the opinion of the vast majority of the Shia scholars that one cannot use or work with the Hasan or Muwathaq narrations since the Shia placed two conditions to accept a narration:

1-Iman (Faith of the narrator).
2-`Adalah (Reliability of his narrations).

And that al-Tusi also placed this as a condition but he didn’t stick to it etc…

In short, what the author is saying is that the Hasan Hadith has gathered the condition of Iman but lost that of `Adalah, while the Muwathaq has gathered the condition of `Adalah but lost that of Iman, and I add that the Hasan is superior to the Muwathaq in Shia Hadith since they care more about the religion of the man than his reliability as narrator.

Now that all of this is out of the way, we begin by collecting all prophetic narrations from al-Kafi to see what exactly is their amount, we collected:

1-Any narration that has a saying from the Prophet (SAWS) and they are extremely rare.
2-Any narration that tells us about any action that the Prophet (SAWS) did from Salat or Zakat ect…
3-Any narration that describes the Prophet (SAWS) personality, physique, character, clothing ect…
4-Any narration that informs us about a virtue or honor or blessing that Allah bestowed upon the Prophet (SAWS).

FINAL RESULTS

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Total number of narrations in al-Kafi is taken from al-Shaheed al-Awwal as written in al-Ijtihad wal-Taqleed by al-Khu’i and is 16,199 narrations.
I have used the authentication of al-Majlisi in “Mir’at al-`Uqoul” since his gradings are the most popular, the most accepted and the most balanced:
-TOTAL SAHIH: 285. / Percentage out of total in al-Kafi = 1.75%
-TOTAL HASAN: 358. / Percentage out of total in al-Kafi = 2.21%
-TOTAL MUWATHAQ: 128. / Percentage out of total in al-Kafi = 0.79%
-TOTAL WEAK: 1,624. / Percentage out of total in al-Kafi = 10%
-TOTAL UNGRADED: 13. / Percentage out of total in al-Kafi = 0.08%
> TOTAL NUMBER OF NARRATIONS: 2,408 out of 16,199 / Percentage out of total in al-Kafi = 14.86% with repetition.
FURTHER OBSERVATIONS:
-All “Sahih” narrations listed above are not connected to the messenger (saw), the chain usually stops at Ja`far al-Sadiq who was born 70 years after the death of the source of knowledge Muhammad (saw).
-Only about one or two narrations in this entire book are actually connected to Prophet Muhammad (saw) such as the one from Jabir bin `Abdullah in volume 5, page 325, chapter “Worst of women.”
-Almost every narration listed as “Hasan” above, comes through the path of one narrator and he is Ibrahim bin Hashim al-Qummi, whose reliability was not documented but is assumed to be “honest”.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the above, the average unbiased Muslim who wishes to follow the teachings and example of Prophet Muhammad ibn `Abdullah (saw) sees in front of him a giant Shia book containing more than 16,000 narrations but Shia scholars only guarantee the authenticity of around 300 reports, while on the other hand from a big Sunni book containing more than 7,000 narrations their scholars guarantee him the authenticity of almost the entire book.
What interests me as an unbiased objective researcher is not the size of a book, as a person who reads the Qur’an I know for a fact that I need to hold on to the sayings of the Prophet (saw), his instructions and his orders. Bukhari’s book which is smaller seems to concentrate so much more than al-Kafi on prophetic life and narrations, I feel as if I know so much more about the Prophet’s (saw) life and his ways and even about the people around him, this to me is more admirable and appealing. On top of that Bukhari’s book has almost three times more prophetic narrations than Kulayni’s book.
The unbiased researcher who follows Allah’s instructions will naturally lean towards the book with the biggest number of authentic and connected prophetic narrations as the Qur’an has planted in our hearts the love of Muhammad (saw) and our eagerness to learn more about his noble life will drive us towards the best religious source.
Peace be upon our Prophet (saw) and his family and followers.
  1. religion for Iranian is not an act of worship it is an act of identity and nationalism. you can give them all the reason and evidence still they don’t believe you and they will curse the companions more and more and curse Aisha (ra). and those who follow them . after living six years in Tehran i found out that if someone asked about my religion just smile and not get sucked into there pitiful arguments. because they curse the companions and ahhle sunnah . corruption is in all time high in iran . and most of the people know about economical corruption and still choose to not rise their vice because they’re indoctrinated by a religion that teaches hate and therefore the people are isolated from Muslims and teaching of our prophet(peace be upon him )and the whole world. Iranian society has never been so divided. some who receive monthly salary from iranian government always show up for demonstration and mischief and betrayal . and use their false religion to justify their wrong doings . most of shias in iran do not believe in islam but when we talk about islam they assume we talk about arab superiority and because im not an arab they call me ISIS or vahabi or terrorist .
    i want to thank you anyway for spreading the knowledge . one day when i see someone whose really interested in islam not shiaism i will use your arguments to guide him . thank you so much for your beautiful website may allah reward you .
